The last post for English course

Hello Bloggers
This is the last post of the English course, and we have to talk about English.

In my experience, learning English at university is very different to learn English at school, because in my School my teachers used to focus in the grammatical area, and a little in the reading, but not too much in writing, speaking and listening. So as you can see, the learning at university is more focus in the practical area, more speaking, more writing.
The use of the blogs is a good tool to practise the writing, specially when we choose the theme that we want to speak because we could write and write many hours about this.

I think I need to improve more in listening, because I have problems to hear in my own mother language, and is more difficult in other; and speaking because I can't speak fluently, and pronounce well all the words. Also, I need to know more words and more vocabulary because sometimes I don't know what is the meaning of some word, or I can't explain something because I forgot a word or I don't know how do you say the word in English. That is bad, and I know that the best way to improve, is practising, but I don't have a person to talk in English, so sometimes I speak with myself in English, just like a game.

Really, outside the class I use English every day, specially in my music, although I have a too many songs in other languages, English is the most used. Now I'm taking song lessons, and the teacher asks us to sing songs in English. Also, I remove the subtitles in Spanish of the movies and change to English to practise the listening.  At University, in some subject is obligatory read books in English, and they aren't usually short lecture, so it takes more time to read in English than in Spanish, but I know that with these books, you can know more words related to your career. Last time, I've bought some books written in English about some theme that I like (crime, fantasy, etc) to read in the summer, so I'm anxious and expect to the summer vacation because I'll spend my free time reading books.

Anthropology programme in Universidad de Chile

Hi folks!
This time I'm going to write about the changes I would like to make to my study programme.
As I told in older post, I'm studying anthropology and this is my second year, and I'm ending the last semester of the  'Basic Cycle'. My career has a formal duration of 5 years, but really it takes 7 years to end, including thesis and practice, very long.

Curriculum map in physical Anthropology

In this Basic Cycle, you study 4 semester with 'general' subjects and formation, but really of 24 subjects,  2 are related to Physical Anthropology, 4 to Archaeology, and the rest with Social Anthropology, and I think that is not fair. So, since the beginning of the career, we have problems because there are three mention and the basic cycle only prepare for social mention, and I think this situation must be change.

Then we have to decide what mention we want to specialize. I like the mention of physical Anthropology and Archaeology, so I hope someday have the two mention.
In this career you make your own path and you decide what study, but to have a good job, is necessary make a many scientific papers, because if you don't publish, you are not a good anthropologist, and that is sad.

In technology.. ufff... is terrible. The technology is very old, the most new is a Scanning Electron Microscope (the jewel of the faculty) but is more useful for student of science, not in Anthropology. The classroom are not enough big for the student (there are 60 persons is classroom for 30), laboratories haven't the capacity for student (with 4 persons, is full), when the weather is hot, we haven't air conditioning, in FACSO there are air vent but in class you can't ear to the teacher because it has a terrible sound. These things I would like to change.

In Teaching Methods.. I think it could be better, because we need more practice class, for example, more fieldwork, more laboratories (to prepare for Archaeology and Physical Anthropology), and not spend the majority of the time in lectures. I think with practice we learn more and we can remember more things.

That is all about my career.
Have a nice weekend

Next Summer Holidays

Hi folks!
Summer is comming and my body knows it (I have allergy to the sun :C). I hate the summer, I don't like hot weather, I prefer frosty days. The good thing is: there is no more classes and you can rest after a exhausting academic year.
I usually work in summer to have my money and buy the things that I need, and travel to someplace where I want to go, for example, last summer my boyfriend and I went to Viña del Mar for 1 week and we met other places around. For this year -really, next year because only February is my rest moth-, I only want to travel to Queule (the place where I lived) with my boyfriend, we enjoy touring different places, we can trekking, eat fresh food, go across the river with kayak, visit legendary places (for example: 'La piedra bruja'), etc. I had no more plans at now but I'm open to new experiences and improvise travels.
Caleta Queule

I talked to my family about Malalhue and the Lake of Panguipulli (the place where we make the fieldwork), and my dad is fascinated to know the place, so is probably that we will go to Panguipulli in 2017. I would like to go again, because we went one day and that wasn't enough, Panguipulli is amazing and I would like to meet surroundings.
Malalhue

Lake of Panguipulli

I always read a lot in summer and this summer won't be the exception. I have many books to read and I hope end the majority. I like to read while I'm travelling, and I travel a lot in car or bus (I love it), but I also like see the landscape, so I read more when we cross cities.

That's all for today.
Have a nice weekend!

Myths and legends

Hi blogger!

Today I have to speak about my favorite myths. Really, I don't have favorite myths, as a student of anthropology and reader of hundred myths and legends, I think all are interesting and each one says a lot about its culture, so if difficult to choose one.
This time I will talk about the legend of 'El Camahueto'.

This is a legend from Chiloé, Chile. I remember I read it from books when I was child, and it talks about a big calf and a horn on its forehead, like an unicorn. The animal has a powerful force. Camahueto born by a horn bury in the ground and grow up under hills near the coast, and when is 'adult' (twenty or twenty five years later), it surface and go to the ocean to find the marine cow (Vaca Marina, other mythology figure of Chiloé). In the road to go to the sea, Camahueto left deep groove in the ground with its horn that can become in a stream. Is impetuous, furious and violent, destroy all that is found in its road. People who suppose that there is one of them in their property, call to a wizard (named 'lacero') or a machi, who create a special string to capture the Camahueto. The animal is calmed when the wizard cut its horn, because the horn is the source of the force and virility. Then, the wizard guides the Camahueto to the sea. Machi or Lacero uses the horns for magic purpose, for example, can create another Camahueto or can prepare mixture, unguent, etc., use the horn for curing or illness. People says that one potion (scraping of the horn) has the capacity to restore the manhood of older man. It too has the power for rejuvenate, cure rheumatism, anemia, infection in the skin, etc.

Like an interesting detail, the game: Mitos y Leyendas of Icarito has a card of this mythological animal.

Have a nice weekend!

Post graduate studies in Anthropology

Hello Blogger!

This time, the post is about postgraduate courses I would like to take.

I have said before (in other post) that I want to study the mention of Physical Anthropology, so, if I end my career, I will have a bachelor's degree in Anthropology, mention in Physical Anthropology. But of course, I want to study always, forever and ever xD because I love to learn and makes me feel good help the people with my knowledge.

I would like to know more about archaeology, forensic, and Egyptology, my dream is study and have graduate in these I mention, and of course, work in something related with these three subjects. I would like to take the: Biological Anthropological Science MPhil in University of Cambridge, Forensic or Medical Anthropology MSc in University of Edinburgh, Archaeology and Anthropology MPhil in University of Bristol and Egyptology in Spain or UK.

All the courses that I want to take are abroad, because in Chile these postgraduates are not enough developed. The best countries for study the things that I want are in North America or Europe, (UK, Spain, Germany), because there is more valuate these work and the payment is higher than in Chile (here you have to take more than one job for earn enough to sustain your home :C )  I prefer study in blended system because with this system I could work and study at the same time, to pay the postgraduate.
I don't know what will happen in the future, I hope be happy with my life and work, in equilibrium with me and the nature.
Have a nice weekend.

How will be my future job?

Hi people!
Is difficult to think about how will be my future job, because the future is uncertain, and sometimes our wishes can change and the life can prepare something different. But I like to think how could be work in physical anthropology in Chile or in the world.

I know that if I choose work with contract and in laboratory, is probably that I will had to work from 8-9 to 5-6, and that is not good, because I like have time to share with my family and friends, and have time for myself, is very important have your own space and time to relax. I would like to go out of Chile and work in Forensic Anthropology because in other countries the career is more value, the salary is more high, and there's other lines of investigation that I would like to follow.

In the future, I see me working almost all the time in laboratories, and sometimes traveling to some place for remove the skeletal remains. I can see me working with other persons of different disciplines in investigation, I think it's very important.

But I don't want to live only with a degree in Anthropology with mention in Physical Anthropology and Archaeology, I would like to study other careers to complement my education, and construct my own way in investigation and academic field. I would like to work in a job that allow me travel, have enough free time and develop my skills in other fields, like sports (I would like to know about other martial arts), other activities like sing (I love sing), play piano, etc., and I hope have long holidays :3

I hope work enough to buy my own house and support many cats that I want to have xD
But for reach all these things, I have to get past these situation:

Have a nice looooong wekend!! Enjoy.

TV series: Criminal Minds

Hi blogger!
We have to speak about a TV series or soap operas we have an obsession with. In my case, at now I'm not obsessed with a Tv series because I haven't enough time. I like Tv series and movies about criminals, murderers, killers, and dark characters. The last series that I saw was Stranger Things during the strike (in july), but the series I used to be Obsessed is Criminal Minds, and that was 4 or 3 years ago.

Criminal Minds is an american police series television about drama and crime. I liked  (and I still like it) because it combines the music, poetry, physiology, life stories about the mean characters and the history of criminals of each chapter. I learned a lot with the chapters, because each chapter talks about a different criminal (who were serial killers), so the history, the pathology, and the way to solve the case always changes.

I loved the character of Spencer Reed (Matthew Gray Gubler), because is the cleverest man in the series, is a genius with many careers and PhD, he has an high IQ of 187, he can read 20000 words per minute, and has eidetic memory!!! He has problems to express his ideas, and can't understand hints, is very rational and no emotional (he has Asperger's syndrom). He is always reading many books, and the clothes he wears is not very common (maybe unfashionable but I like it).

I used to see every day 2 or 3 chapters (because it has 12 season and every season has 12 chapters). When I was with my boyfriend and we were watching Tv, I didn't talk to him to see Criminal Minds :C But then I entered to the University and I see it less and less until I had no time to see Criminal Minds u.u And now I don't see more this because some of the actors are out of the Series, and I think all were important. But I still loving the opening of each chapter:

That's all.
Have a nice weekend, is Friday!!

Pets: my cats and dog

Hi everyone!
Today we choose to talk about pets. Yes!! I think animals are a essential part of my life, I used to live with a lot of animals in Queule, and I loved it, but now I have no pets in my house in Santiago, is sad for me. But I will talk about the more important pets in my life, the majority are cats, I love felines.

Romina
The first was Monin, I have no pictures about this cat, but he lived with me for five years around. He came to my life when I was six, I don't remember how he arrived, but he was loving, playful, and a wonderful cat. I shared my food with him xD I used to give him my yogurt, my bread, my lollipop, etc. He used to go with me partway to the school (I had to walk kilometers to go to the school), and when I returned to the house, he used to wait for me in the gate. One day, he went with me to the school, and when I returned, he was no waiting for me. He had gone, and never go back. I don't know what happens with he, but I suppose he was persue by a dog. That was a sad day.
Kitten

The second is Romina. My grandfather gave me Romina one day... that I don't remember, but was almost six years ago. She was a crazy cat, she used to sleep over my stomach, and I couldn't move. We used to play with a lot of things, sometimes she gave me some gifts (birds or mouse). Then she became pregnant and I played with all of them. Romina died last year.

The last was Chiquitín, it was a dog, a little dog. My dog's aunt had five puppies, and I wanted one to take care of the house. When I saw the puppies, I look the smallest, he looked sick and helpless, and I chose him, that's the reason why I called him: Chiquitín. The best choice. That happened when I was 9. He was cheerful, happy, loving and playful. He used to go always with me to the beach, to run, to play, to walk, to sing, etc. He was a faithful friend, he was with my when I was sad, when I was angry, he never let my, I loved him. But when I came to Santiago, he became sick, until he died. I don't know if it was by sadness, but I miss him, every time I go to Queule, I remember when we used to run, and we felt free.

With this last picture I remember Chiquitín, we used to see the grow dark, together.

Frutillar and Chiloé!

Hi folks!
Last semester I wrote about a band that I like (Arkona), and I described how was the concert in 2015 (I think it was the best concert, if you want to know more about this band, you can visit my post http://hillaryz.blogspot.cl/2016/06/a-band-i-like-apkoha.html ), so today I'm going to talk about the best holiday I've ever had: the travel to Chiloé.

'Teatro de los Lagos'

It was in February 2010, when I was thirteen. We were four in the car: my dad, my mom, my half-sister and I. We wanted to go to Chiloé for two weeks, but we turn to Frutillar many hours because my mom wanted to meet this place, and it was amazing. Frutillar has wonderful places with incredible sceneries, like the theatre, the lake, the volcano, the trees, etc. It was the first time that I went to Frutillar, and I would like to go back. I took some pictures, here are many of them.

Transbordador
Then we continued our travel, and after many hours, we arrived to Puerto Montt. We cross the ''Canal de Chacao'' in a ferry or ''transbordador''.
We continued in our travel and finally, we arrived in Quellón, where we saw beautiful scenery. We went to craft fairs, and the ''Hito Cero'', where the Carretera Panamericana ends, and another places that at now I don't remember, but I think all was amazing.

It was an unforgettable experience. I would like to go to Chiloé again.
I hope you have a nice weekend!!

A cold country: Norway

Hi bloggers!
It had been a long time since I don't write here. It's my fourth semester, and the Lever 4 of English. This time I will talk about another place that I would like to know. Last semester, I wrote about  Switzerland, but now I chose: Norway!!
Why I chose this country? Ohh! First, is a cold country and I love cold weather, in winter you can see beautiful landscapes with aurora polaris like this picture.

Second, I like the nordic history, I know a bit of its mythology (norse mythology) and I think is very interesting study its components, like writing in runes, belive in the Valhala, Odin, Ragnarok, valkyries, etc; including trolls (I love this supernatural being).

Third, there are some places or monuments that I would like to visit in this country, for example the Sverd i fjell, the monument of ''Three swords'', it commemorates the history if the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872 that took place here.  The swords are made of bronze, and they measure around 10 metres. Also, I would like to visit the Preikestolen, is a cliff which rises around 600 metres

Finally, because here lives a beautiful breed of domestic cat, the Norwegian Forest cat, is lovely and I would like to have one of them.
That's all, folks.
I hope you'll be ok, and have a nice weekend.

What is your carbon footprint?

 Hi guys!

This time the topic is: Environment and Carbon footprint.
Carbon Footprint is the '' (...) total of greenhouse gas emission directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, event or product'' (www.met-net.org.uk/greenhouse-gas-reporting
.html). Today we had to calculate our carbon footprint in the page www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx It was an interesting experience, because I realized what is my impact in the environment.
According to the website to calculate my carbon footprint, it is around 1,7 tonnes of CO2e, less than Chilean average (3,87 tonnes), and less than worldwide target to combat climate change (2 tonnes).
I'm surprised by the results, I have to admit that I'm not the best environmentally friendly person, I would like to do more things for the planet, but I think it too depends on the place where we live, for example, when I'm in Queule (my origin place), I recycle more the waste because in there doesn't exist waste collection vehicle or dumping site where the community throw their garbage, so we have to be clever and give different uses to the things. For example: the cardboard we use like doormat in the porch, or we make smaller box to contain little things, like nails, screws, etc., usually to contain tools, and do the same with tin bottles; with organic matter, we collect in pails and once a week we bury somewhere my grandparents want to plant; with fabrics, we make handkerchief, table decorator, or cloth to clean the table; we take care the water, etc.  Here in Santiago I can't do exactly the same things, but with my parents, we go once every two weeks to the nearest recycling point and let everything that can be used, and in the house we unplug the things we are not using, we turn off the light, try as little as possible to open the refrigerator door (I read that the Freon is harmful to the ozone layer), and when I have time, I make crafts of recycled material.

I think making this actions we contribute to reduce the consume of energy, and reduce the ecological impact. I would like to sow and plant to obtain my own food, but is difficult because I don't have enough space to plant, and the soil in my house is not good enough to plant the things that I want. I hope someday do this, and other ideas that I think could be interesting to do.
Give me some ideas to make this a better world C:

Have a nice weekend.

Planning a fictitious trip to London

Hi again!
The last work in the class was make a planning of a group trip to London.  Of course it was fiction, I have no money for this :C  but I would like to go to London.
In the activity, we had to choose one or two destinations to visit every day for a week. For this, I considered elements such proximity and opening times of the places to visit. I think this activity wasn't so difficult to me because I am very structured and I like have a plan of things to do or places to visit when I go somewhere, and I always use maps (in pictures or drawn in a piece of paper). I must admit that I used to argue with my boyfriend when I went out with him to some place and he didn't know how to get to the destination xD Now, together we search the directions before leaving home.
In my opinion, the activity was an excellent tool because it teaches us to use the internet for something very quotidian as the search for an address or plan a trip to somewhere, so this is important for the useful in daily life.
Picture of the Natural History Museum, London

I read a little about every place to visit, and the place that caught my attention and now I am hopeful to go someday, is the Natural History Museum... why? because its architecture (is a wonderful building),  by its collection: it has specimens collected by Charles Darwin!!, and because it is known as the great centre of natural history and investigation. It also has a ''Crime Scene Live'' where you can be an investigator and solve a crime of a murder mystery. I would like to do this activity, I think I'd enjoy it.

About a place I wouldn't like to visit... mmm.. I think the Madame Tussaud, because it is a wax museum, it has mainly famous people, and I don't care famous people, I wouldn't pay for entry and take a picture with a wax figure, not with the real people.

There are other place I would like to go in
London: The Sherlock Holmes Museum, in Baker Street. I've read all the stories of this fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and I would like to go and see how this writer thought the house of Sherlock and Watson, see some objects that are mentioned in all the short stories, and try to recreate this character.

I let you one video of this museum:

I hope you are fine and have a nice weekend.

A musical-fantasy movie: 'Imaginaerum' (2012)

Hi blogger:
This time I must talk about movies. yeyy!! I like see movies, series and short films of different genres, from adventure, science fiction, drama, and crime to surreal fiction, historical, etc. The only genres I don't like (they tired me) are romantic and actual horror films (I prefer  the classics: Frankenstein, Dracula, Nosferatu, etc)
The last movie I enjoyed watching was Imaginaerum. I saw it one month ago in my house, alone. I was sick and rested in my bed, listen music and watching a documentary of Nightwish called: Please Learn The Setlist In 48 Hours”, when they talk about a film that they made where Tuomas (the leader of the band) was the co-writer of the history and the composer of the music, so it caught my attention and I decided to search and see it.
It is a Finnish-Canadian production of musical fantasy made in 2012 by director Stobe Harju, and written by him and Tuomas Holopainen. The history is very sad, is about an old man who was a great musician but now is in coma, and he has fantasies of his childhood where he fight with phantoms of his past, and with Alzheimer/dementia, trying to remember his daughter :'C
About the actors, I really don't know anything about them, I only know that Tuomas acts like adult Tom (the principal character), and the rest of the band appear in the musician scenes where they play.
The film was based in the Nightwish's album with the same name: Imaginaerum, published in 2011.

I enjoyed the movie by the music and the history, I like the way the film capture the fantasies of a demential minds, and how the family and friends (in real life) suffer with this condition.
I hope you search  the movie and enjoy it as I did. I put the trailer.
Have a nice day!

A band I like: Apkoha

Hi guys,
Today I would like to speak about a band I like. Is really difficult to choose one, because I like many bands of diverse styles and type of music, so in this case, I’m going to choose: Arkona
Arkona (Apkoha) is a Russian band of folk-pagan metal. They are five members: Masha, in voice; Sergei in the guitar; Ruslan in bass; Vladimir ‘’volk’’ in wind and ethnic instrument; and Andrey in drums. The leader is a woman: Masha Scream (Maria Arkhipova), who sing in the growl style. She founded the band in 2002, and she is the singer and the composer of the lyrics related to the Russian folklore, their history and some characters of the mythology. I like this band because the theme of the lyrics (I must admit that I have to search the translation because I only know some words of this language), they use some traditional Russian instruments, and especially I like the variation in rhythm, times and combination of sounds in the music (I love the bagpipes sound), this can be eared in the song ‘’Yarilo’’ from the album: Goi, Rode Goi!, maybe this could be called my ‘favorite’ song, but I think the majority of the songs are really good.
This band came twice to Chile, in 2013 and 2015, and I went to see them in both concerts. The last year I have the opportunity to get a VIP ticket and I met them, they are very nice people, thankful to the fans and very cheerful. In the meet & great, I gave a gift to Masha: one ‘Kultrun’, an ethnic instrument from mapuche culture, very similar to a russian instrument that she plays in the show, and in the middle of the concert (in the song: Славься, Русь!), she played the kultrun!! That was amazing, I felt realized! Jajaja the people said: wow, how she obtain that? Who get it to her? And I said in my mind: I was :3 I felt so happy.
So, that’s my experience with Arkona (people joke with ‘Arjona’).  I’ve enjoyed their shows, and I’m trying to learn the language to communicate better.
Have a nice weekend, and tell: happy father’s day

Pd: in the moment I wrote this post, I hadn't a good connection to internet, so now I'm going to show a video of the song  Славься, Русь!, or ''Slavsia, Rus'', where you can see Masha playing the russian instrument in her official video clip.

The other video is the song: Yarilo

Pieces of dreams...

 Hello bloggers:
The english teacher gave us one topic to talk today: something I'd like to learn. Oh God! that's something too difficult for me to define, because I can't live without learn at least one thing in a day (yes, I really think this, since learn a new word, in my language or other, to a new piece of piano score). In languagues, I would like to learn many: mapuzungun, Sign language, Latin, Ancient Greek (or 'classical greek'), German, French, Egyptian: hieroglyphs, hieratic and demotic, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, and a large etc., but these are the most important.

I would like to resume classes of Taekwondo, I used to practice here in the University, and before, in a private classes that I have paid in ATA (American Taekwondo Association), but now my schedule doesn't coincide with classes, but I hope to return soon, because with this I keep active and I can channel my energies towards something productive. I hope some day practice more martial arts like: karate, jiu jitsu, muay thai, and maybe, capoeira.
In instruments, I would like to learn to play Hurdy Gurdy,  this is an stringed instrument originated in Europe in the Medieval Age. I like the sound of the strings and the way it needs to be played, but here, in Chile, is very difficult to get, and it's very expensive, so I suffer for this :C
I put a picture of Anna Murphy, ex-member of Eluveitie, playing the hurdy gurdy.

Also, I would like to take piano lessons because I can play a few songs, but I want a guide to learn me the technique and theoretical part, and thus raise the level of difficulty with professional support, to avoid injury.

I've never taken singing lessons, but I'd like to learn lyrical singing because I want to improve on the high notes, learn relaxation techniques, breathing, voice impost, among other things, because I love this, I sing before three years and I've never stopped to do this. If some day I follow this path, I will with metal music, complementing guttural and lyrical singing. The people say that I'm good in this, but I'm shy and nervous, that's the reason why I don't tell to all. I prefer sing for me, because nobody but me  know when I made mistakes jajajaja

I let you some picture about Haggard, a German neo-classical metal musical group who combines classical music and early music with death metal. They use orchestras, guttural, lyrics and clean vocals in a perfect combination with different rythms, creating an interesting atmosphere that takes you into the past. Oh, how I enjoy this!

I recommend listening: ''Awaking The Centuries'' and if you don't like guttural, you can listen the cover: ''Hijo de la luna'' in the album ''Tales of Ithiria'' .

For now, all I have to say is: there are so many things we would like to do, and life is so short for do all these, but I hope you can.
Have a nice weekend.
